The state of Louisiana declared a state of emergency due to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil leak resulted from an explosion and fire on April 20 on a drilling rig about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast.

There are fears of serious damage to fisheries, wildlife refuges and beaches in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

All visitors to Cuba must have medical insurance to enter the country effective from May 1, 2010. This travel insurance must cover medical expenses with coverage in Cuba.

The insurance policy should be purchased in the traveller’s home country but tourists arriving without proper coverage will be required to purchase an appropriate policy from a Cuban insurance company at the airport, port or marina where they arrive. All travellers shall present an insurance policy, certificate or traveling assistance card valid for the time they will stay in Cuba.

Remember as of March 1 Canadians will now be required to have a valid passport for travel to Mexico. For most countries it is now required Canadians have valid passports for travel and it is highly recommended that you use a passport for any travel out of the country.

Remember to check to make sure your passport is up to date and you have at least 2 or 3 blank pages in it before you travel. Renew your passport at least 6 months before it expires.
