Wadi Rum - Desert Camping

After our memorable days visiting Petra, Mohammed our driver and guide for the next 24 hours picked us up at the Marriott hotel in Petra in his black Toyota 4x4 truck. We said good-bye to Eric's brother Stephen as he made his way back to Eilat and then onwards home to Montreal. Eric and I continued on to have our 24 hour desert experience and camping at a traditional style Bedouin camp in the area known as Wadi Rum.

About an hour from the hotel in Petra our driver and guide stopped and proceeded to let some air out of all four tires indicating to us that it was time to hit the sand trails of the desert! We ventured off the paved Jordanian highway and before we knew it we were lost deep in the desert cruising along sand tracks, between unique rock formations, over red dunes and off into what seemed like the endless scenery of Wadi Rum. After over an hour of 4x4'ing we stopped to view and climb some dramatic rock formations and then continued on another 5 minutes to join some local Bedouins set up to welcome us with tea and offer us a camel ride through the desert.

From here continued on throughout the day to explore the vast area of Wadi Rum and the Jordanian desert before ending up at our camp for the evening. Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed as the camp ended up being a bit more touristy than the authentic experience we were hoping for, however it was still a great experience. At camp the Bedouins cooked us a traditional dinner in a sand oven, we took in a desert sunset and the seemingless endless stars visible in the blackness of Wadi Rum desert. We also had the pleasure of meeting two other nice couples that had both done quite a bit of travelling and were able to give us some great suggestions and advice for some of our upcoming destinations.

From Wadi Rum it is on to the Sinai in Egpyt travelling back through Israel and then down the coast.
